My First Bike
When I was younger I was never really into this whole ‘learning how to ride a bike thing’, even though my dad would often be seen riding a bike, to work and around Swindon, as we couldn’t afford a car and lived in a council house. Even when my parents finally sorted out their financial problems and bought a house, the offer of being given a bike from Santa or from my parents for my birthday often came up and my answer would normally be “Art stuff please”.
I was much more into knitting, sitting down to draw something, or learning how to bake cakes, than to go out and be active. I tell you it’s a wonder I’m not bloody obese!
It has been a tug of war most of my life and when I reached teenager, not knowing how to ride a bike didn’t really seem to matter anymore, I’d made my piece with it, and everyone else who didn’t understand why I couldn’t ride a bike could shove it! (I was an angry teenager) Anyways I’d just learn how to drive, which I did and all my friends seemed to follow suit, so it was much more getting into Daddy’s Honda and driving around swindon, really putting up our carbon foot prints and going to drive thru McDonalds/ Burger Kings, than worrying about not being able to ride a bike, as who needs a bike when they have a car right?
WRONG!
When I came to Bristol to start my degree last year, I no longer had the luxury of jumping in a car and driving off for a few hours, I had to walk and wait for the bloody bus, which in Bristol is just god damn expensive!
My flat mates went and got bikes and for a long time that didn’t bother me, as I knew I’d be too scared to cycle around Bristol even if I did get the courage to actually get on a bike. But over the last few months learning how to ride a bike suddenly became much more appealing, as even my fiancée wanted to start cycling around Bristol. I knew that I’d have to start at least trying, as he wanted a bike for his birthday it seemed silly, that at the age of 21 I still couldn’t ride a bike and wouldn’t even be able to go on a bike ride with my flat mates or my fiancée.
So I plucked up the courage and while buying him a bike, I picked up a little beauty of my own, and I finally learnt how to ride a bike! In just a few house, me and Mr Chris Price, went to the basketball court and he patiently watched me, cycle in a circle and ring my bell. Everything was going extremely well, and when we decided to leave I wanted to try my luck a cycling down the street to our house, I was feeling confident, I thought I could do this, but no, I lose control and smash into a parked car. No one was hurt, apart from my ego.
Now I can officially ride a bike, all I need to do now is learn how to do so in a straight line.
